In their early 20s and seeking new beginnings and artistic rebirth, Races formed in the suburban confines of Van Nuys, Los Angeles. Wade Ryff, Breanna Wood, Garth Herberg, Lucas Ventura, Devon Lee and Oliver Hild were familiar with each other, playing in different bands together and had even dated or were currently dating one another. Ryff had been silently writing solo material when a fellow friend asked him to open a show he was booking. Quickly, Ryff assembled a conglomeration of taleneted musicians in the local area, eventually forming the six-piece group Races. Referring to their suggestive name, Ryffs explains:

I relate to the name in the sense that it seems like there is always something to be up against, and strong desire to overcome whatever it is

The band didn’t consider themselves to be a “serious band” until interest spread between labels after JAXART Records felt their music to be too vital to remain unheard. On March 27th, Races released their debut LP Year Of The Witch and have recently released a video for the track Lies. The band have also announced a string of US shows. From the outside, suburban life is easy-peasy: white picket fences, immaculately trimmed lawns, kids who say things like “I’m going out to play ball!” and “I love you, mom and dad!” Picture-perfect Americana. But with the new video for Races’ dreampop single “Lies,” frontman Wade Ryff exposes the toxicity that insularity can breed, and what turmoil lies beneath the squeaky-clean facade.
